What Writers can Learn from Birdbox
Netflix’s newest horror flick has been seen by millions and everyone is talking about it. But what can writers learn from it?
(No, not how to live blindfolded).
One great standout thing in this film, is the character moments. Characters change throughout any piece, they must do or it is a flat story. But every character hides their true self and we as readers/viewers may never see them. As writers we can slip them in. Mallorie tells Boy and Girl that one of the children must look when the time comes. When Boy (her son), volunteers Mallorie refuses to accept saying that she will choose. Girl also volunteers later on and we see Mallorie look stricken. Despite everything, she does love the children and having to chose which one to do a task which could kill them, tears her apart. We don’t have an inner monologue but we see her pain on her face.

The film is a good horror movie for many reasons. One reason being the ambiance. The fear generated in the film drives us to be afraid or at least on edge. This is created by playing on our fears: the fear of violence, the demons of the mind, the feeling of despair and loss of loved ones. The film plays on these whilst taking away a person’s sight making us almost suffocated with that feeling.

We have a simple set of themes in this story and each are linked with a buddy. We have Life and Death, Danger and Freedom, Motherhood and Feminism.
Each of these is set against one another. Playing off one another so we have no choice but think as being together.

There’s something so human about taking something great and ruining it a little so you can have more of it.

The plan for the 17th, when the adult content ban comes in, is to protest.
To do that, we are making as much noise either side of the 17th as possible, and using the site as normal.
On the 17th, dead silence.
People are saying log off but what they really mean is don’t open the site or the app.
But, on the 17th make as much noise as possible on every other platform. Tweet about it and post on facebook and instagram and everywhere else.
What this does is causes a massive dip in ad revenue for one single day. That does not make staff think ‘oh everyone’s gone let’s shut down.’ What it actually makes them think is ‘oh shit people aren’t happy and if people don’t keep using our site we’re out of money and out of jobs.’
A boycott reminds a company that the users (consumers) have the power to make their site (business) worthless with one single coordinated decision.
If you want to join in, here’s what to do:
Do:
Don’t:
Remember: the execs don’t care about anything but money. Shutting down the site means there’s $0 further income from it. That’s their last possible course of action. If we make it clear we’re not happy, they’ll have to do something or we can do more and more until it becomes too expensive.
Protests take commitment. They’re a defiant action against a business that is doing something wrong. They will try to scare you into not participating, because they’re scared. We hold all the power here, sometimes the execs just need to be reminded of that.
Idk if this will work but it’s what I’m gonna do so on the 17th
